On Saturday, May 25th, concerned citizens and activists will march in Tampa to peacefully protest against against the leading GMO (genetically modified organism) manufacturer, Monsanto.

Monsanto, a leading biotech company and manufacturer of pesticides and herbicides, has slowly taken over the food industry. Since the early 1990’s, Monsanto has genetically altered crops like corn, sugar beet, and soy and then sold these products as food without doing any research on the effects it has on humans, the environment, and the food supply.

Thanks to Monsanto’s lobbying efforts to prevent proper labeling, many people remain unaware that grocery stores have quietly replaced the conventional ingredients people find on their shelves with GMOs. Because of this, people across the world, from Australia to West Africa, continue to unite and spread awareness so that we may take back the food supply.

According to the Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, Jeffery Smith, most of America’s processed foods have contained GMOs since 1996. He continued,

“there is mounting evidence that GMOs are linked to thousands of toxic and allergic reactions, thousands of sick, sterile and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ and system studied in lab animals.”

Meanwhile, nobody has conducted any studies on humans. But research has linked GMO plants with autoimmune diseases, gut problems, faulty insulin regulation, infertility, and systemic inflation, among other things.

On the heels of an act passed by Congress taking away our legal recourse to stop the sale, planting, and harvesting of GMO crops, even after proven extremely toxic, it has now become more important than ever for the public to stand in solidarity against the ruthless acts of Monsanto.

“As Americans we now have choices to make that we didn’t have to worry about 20 years ago. We have to be aware where our food is coming from and make responsible, educated decisions. Knowledge is power and where we spend our dollar can affect the future of this country and our food supply. We have the right to our health!” ~Leah Lubin

Join us to protest against Monsanto’s evil practices!

June 1st: Free Bradley Manning

The Bradley Manning Support Network has issued a national call to action for June 1st: the start of Bradley Manning’s trial.

Decisions to slaughter hundreds of thousands of people all over the world get made right here at MacDill Central Command. Bradley Manning witnessed what those decisions look like on the ground in Iraq and did what anyone with a healthy conscience would do: he leaked the video to WikiLeaks.

… The video of our military indiscriminantly murdering civilians.

We stand passionately in solidarity with Bradley Manning … He stood up for the people and got tortured for it. On the day his trial starts, lets pay back some karma.

Peace, Ethics, and FREE BRADLEY MANNING!

550356_10151350188356073_617286002_nAll community members and activists are invited to participate in Tampa’s very own May Day ACTION. It is important that we unite on this important day to push for equality, and liveable conditions both in the workplace and in the community.

The recently announced immigration bill is leaving out millions of undocumented immigrants and is forcing immigrants workers to indefinite work-contracts with the push for Blue Cards/Guest Worker Programs. It is also fining immigrants with supposed “unpaid taxes” which generally amount to tens of thousands and on top of all of this, application fees.

We must move to push this bill in overall a better, all-inclusive direction! 11 MILLION UNITE FOR EQUALITY!

Please, President Obama: grant PFC Bradley Manning a full pardon and release him immediately. Not only did he expose human rights violations, locking him up for doing so itself adds to our list of crimes. Demonstrate that we, as a nation, can critically examine our behavior and correct it when we ought to. Show that Americans care about ethics and international law, and celebrate Bradley Manning for bravely exposing the truth. You claim that your administration represents a new era of transparency in government. Your actions should reflect that.

On December 18, 2012, Carlton Williams, a resident at Aaran’s Walk apartments, informed Jennifer Rendahl, property owner and manager, that bedbugs had infested his apartment. Ms. Rendahl sent a maintenance worker to the unit. The worker took a quick look, told the tenant he’d have to find lodging during the extermination process and left.

Until Hillsborough County Code Enforcement contacted her more than 2 weeks later, Ms. Rendahl had not once contacted Mr. Williams nor had she taken any further action. She had, however, kept busy telling other residents to avoid contact with Mr. Williams, clearly attempting to isolate him and overtly blaming him for the infestation of the unit.

The Tampa Solidarity Network has united with Mr. Williams (“CC” to his friends) to demand justice.

On Thursday, January 3, CC and the Tampa Solidarity Network delivered a letter to Ms. Rendahl demanding that she exterminate the begbugs and provide alternative lodging as necessary. Typically, residents do not need to evacuate the premises for bedbug extermination, but Ms. Rendahl retaliated to our extermination demand by telling CC to vacate the premises for 6 weeks, at his own expense, and that he must make arrangements by January 31st or she will evict him.

On Thursday, January 10, after several days of flyering around the community to share CC’s story, CC found a ‘notice of non-compliance’ on his door. Demanding that he vacate the premises within 7 days, to comply with a section in the lease that provides the landlord the right to terminate the lease at any point if the tenant refuses to vacate an uninhabitable apartment, Ms. Rendahl cited a ‘licensed pest control agency’ as the authority on the necessity to vacate for 4-6 weeks to treat for bedbugs. The pest control agency in question did not identify itself to CC, or leave a business card. Further, Florida law states that if a landlord does order a tenant to vacate the premises because of bedbugs, the duration shall not exceed 4 days.

We demand that Jennifer Rendahl either put CC up for the four days that she wants him gone, or treat for the bedbugs while he remains in the unit, something commonly done with bedbugs.

CC has paid his rent consistently on-time during the year he has lived at Aaran’s Walk. Ms. Rendahl at first offered and then denied CC the downstairs living situation he needed for his health and just recently told him that she denied a new carpet upon moving in because his “income was too low.”

For 32 years, CC had maintained at least one full-time public job until health issues forced him to retire from USF Tampa in 2010. A dedicated and beloved custodian for all those years, his coworkers and the USF Staff Senate honored him with a Quiet Quality Award in 2008, the same year USF privatized the SunDome, eliminating his second job. The attendant cut in pay forced CC to move to an insecure neighborhood where people robbed and beat him, resulting in deteriorating health and disabling bouts of vertigo. As CC’s health problems persisted, coworkers and associates from across campus donated more sick leave than he had the ability to use, testament to the respect and affection he has become accustomed to experiencing.

CC is a devoted father to a 15-year-old daughter, Diamond, and a well-known figure around USF’s Tampa campus where he is a regular at sporting events.
